The unpacking from the mass London delivery is still underway, but I thought I would take some time to talk some more about Dark Heresy Second Edition.
In my previous post I spoke about what I liked, so in this one I thought I would talk a little about what I don't. Now before I go into that I wanted to say that my gaming group and I have decided to return to First Edition for a number of reasons, some of which are due to the problems we feel second edition has, but to be honest a large portion is because we miss all the great expansion books First Edition has. I normally hate it when people refuse to adapt to a new edition, I'm looking at you second edition 40k fans, but bugger it I like all those extra expansions!
So, what where the segments of second edition that really turned me off.
Influence: I hate influence, I think that it's a system that is rife for abuse and overly complicated. It makes sense on the outside, the more notoriety you gain the better equipment the Inquisition are willing to give you, but the issue to me at least is that it hasn't been thought out past that point. Effectively you can screw with your subtlety rating, which to me seems as useful as tits on a fish, and at low levels grab gear that in first edition you would have to scrimp and save for ages! I just dislike it and I'm disappointed that they aren't changing it in the next version update.
Growth: this is one I'm sure will be fixed with later expansions, but due to the lack thereof and the
openness of character creation and leveling, it never feels like you have something to work towards. In first edition you had character class changes to look towards, going from guardsman to Storm trooper or tech priest to grand magos, but there isn't that in second edition and it removes the thrill of leveling up.
Talents and skills: they just aren't as interesting and are too open. High Tech use can allow someone to hack into a high security console and defuse an ancient xenos explosive. Those two things are mutually exclusive and as such shouldn't be under the same skill umbrella.
Well that's that for now, I'll still keep posting about my Dark heresy exploits, but for now it will be First Edition.
